Squash Finals and Awards 2012
Cooma Monaro Express - 18/12/12
The Cooma Squash Club held the finals at the courts
on Thursday night. In "A" grade Hydraulinks Cooma came out the
winners defeating Paul Dyball Builders. Corey Bedingfield set the tone by def.
Phil Ingram. Phil was playing his last game for the club for 12 months as he is
doing an exchange program overseas.
Luke Abraham had a good match against Peter Mould
before defeating him in three games. Andrew Freeburn thought he was going to
have an easy match against Mark Kenmir, winning the first two games 9-0,9-3.
However Mark does not go down easily and took the next two, but succumbed in
the fifth. The Tonini family rounded up the match with Jared beating his sister
Kailey 3-1 Even though Kailey has been playing B grade she made him work for
the result.
In "B" grade Monaro Discount Tyres
defeating Cooma Crane Hire with the final result not decided till the last
match. Corey Stockton - a newcomer to the comp. def. Lyn Elton in four. Then
Peter Luk, who has not had a good run during the comp. took on the ever cagey
Susan Walters. They went to five games - with Susan coming out the eventual
winner after some very good squash. Matt Shirvington then played another
newcomer to the comp. Ned McDonnell and had a good win - Matt has been playing
very well through the whole comp. This left the final match between Sarah
Hamilton and Darrell Gaukroger. This was won by Sarah in 4 - although the 70+
year old put up a fight and took one game off her.
The comp average winners were presented with their
trophies on the night. Results were:
"A" Grade - A1 Corey Bedingfield, A2 Luke
McDonald, A3 Andrew Freeburn and A4 Jan Wassink.
"B" Grade - B1 Susan Walters, B2 Alex
Walters, B3 Tony Potter, B4 Matt Shirvington
During November the Club Championships were played
and trophies were presented to the following players:
Womens:
A grade champion - Tara Pateman
B grade champion - Kailey Tonini, r/up Kim Kleven
B grade Plate - Irene Tozer
Mens:
A Grade champion - Corey Bedingfield, r/up Phil
Ingram
A grade Plate - Luke McDonald
B grade champion - Hayden Smith, r/up Stuart Wood
B grade Plate - Matthew Kent
The final award of the night was the presentation
of the Rorey Kennedy Award - voted by club members. It was won (for the second
time) by Corey Bedingfield - and rightly so. Corey has once again done a
sterling job organising the comps. through the year and it has been obviously
appreciated by all members. The Summer comp will begin during January - there
will be some chook runs in the meantime.

Spring Squash Finals
Spring Squash Finals
From Cooma Monaro Express 26/9/12
The finals of the spring squash competition were played on Thursday night at the squash courts. Some interesting matches were played with an equally interesting final result in A grade - resulting in a draw for the top spot. While Tara Pateman and Will Nicholls demolished their opponents John Sutton and Andrew Egan for their team Paul Dyball Builders, Andrew Freeburn did likewise against Gary Cornish for his team Monaro Discount Tyres. This left the final match between Corey Bedingfield and Simon White as the decider - Simon had to win 4 points only to clinch the match. This was not to be and both teams finished with 70 points each and the resulting draw! Cooma Trophy and Gifts finished up second with Hydraulinks Cooma coming 3rd. The stand-out match here was between Luke Abraham and Craig Bottom - where a 5-setter was played before Luke came out the winner after a hard-fought match.
B grade had an exciting finish to the comp. as well. Irene Tozer and Annika De Koning won for their team Cooma Trophy and Gifts, while Ian Corby and up and coming star Hayden Smith won for Truckstop. This left the no. 1's to play to decide the winner for B grade. Aron Rogers played Ira Hendriks. Ira won the 1st but Aron returned the favour and won the 2nd. Ira Came back and won the 3rd, but Aron slowly returned to the good form he has shown through the comp. and took the next and deciding two games. This made Truckstop the B grade winner.
Third and fourth places went to Monaro Discount Tyres and Cooma Crane Hire respectively. Stand-out match here was between Karen Sutton and young Andrew Bartell. While Andrew has not had a good run this comp. he took on Karen Sutton who has been one of the top runners in here grade. They went to five games, with Karen winning the last - only 6 points separated them at the end of the match. Individual grade winners were:
A grade - A1 Corey Bedingfield, A2 Will Nicholls, A3 Luke Abraham, A4 Darren Davis
B grade - B1 Jan Wassink,B2 Ian Corby,B3 Hayden Smith,B4 Irene Tozer,B5 Kristie Seears
Congratulations once again to Corey for running the comp - it would not have been possible without him. The summer competition will commence week starting October 8. Nominations are now being called for. Chicken runs will be held over the school holidays. Contact the squash courts for details 64521213
