Spring Competition 2013 Wrap up

The finals of the spring squash competition were held on Thursday night, along with the annual presentations, at the Cooma Squash Courts. There were some excellent matches played on the night in both grades and some very close finishes

A grade was won by Hydraulinks Cooma, comprising John Kleven (as a sub for Corey Bedingfield), Craig Wheatley, Hayden Smith and Pete Ingram.  Runners-up were Simon White, Chris Pendergast, Jan Wassink and Torin Findlow playing for Hillross.  The game score was 9-8 – a close finish. 3rd and 4th places were filled by Truck Stop and Mark Kenmir & Co – where the result was decided by points as both teams won 6 games each.

B grade was won by the team that led from the start of the comp Hillross – Ged Mackay, Tim Wassink, Jim Nichols, Darcy Clayton (absent on the night) and Sarah Wolf (sub for Corey Morrison).  They defeated Paul Dyball Builders – Stuart Wood, Annika Jones (sub for David Hogan), Jason Harris, Jeremy Mackay (absent) and Brad Constance.  Jason Harris almost caused an upset when he missed out on winning the third game of his match by one point – a win would have turned the tables completely.  3rd and 4th places were filled by Hydraulinks Cooma and Mark Kenmir & Co.

Individual winners in A grade were Corey Bedingfield, John Kleven, Jan Wassink and James Hain.  In B grade they were Susan Walters, Tim Wassink, Jim Nichols, Lyn Elton and Leanne Corby.  Congratulations to them all – they were well deserved.

Championships were played in November and the winners were:

A grade Mens – Corey Bedingfield, runner-up Justin Bolton

A Grade Womens – Kailey Tonini, runner-up Alicia Bolton

B grade Mens – Chris Tame, runner-up John Harding

B Grade womens – Susan Walters, runner-up Kim Kleven

The winner of the Rory Kennedy medal for Best & Fairest for the year went to Susan Walters.  Congratulations Susan - a fitting winner.

President John Kleven also paid tribute to one of our long serving members Irene Tozer who is putting herself out to grass after 36 years of squash – we will miss you.

There will be chicken runs played over the holiday period until the next comp starts in 2014.

B Grade Squash Report 4.4.13

B GRADE SQUASH REPORT 4.4.13

The last comp. games were held on Thursday night with some interesting results. Jim Nichols (Mark Kenmir & Co.) showed he was an upcoming force to be reckoned with when he played the previously undefeated Tony Potter (Kleven Spain) and won the match 3-1.  There were some very good shots played but Jimmy had what it takes (even after footy practice) and wore Tony down.

Kym Kleven (Kleven Spain) took on Jed Mackay. She won the first 9-6, lost the 2nd 10-8, won the 3rd 10-9, lost the 4th 9-4 but then demolished Jed 9-1 in the final game.  It was a long match and good to watch.

Susan Walters played Peter Luk.  Susan has been the best no. 1 player this comp but Peter played his heart out and won the match 3-1.  Once again he came off the court looking as if he had stepped out of the shower!

Snowy Hydro suffered complete demolition from Monaro Discount Tyres. Larry Maat def. David Hogan 3-0, Darrell Gaukroger def. Troy Stevenson (who by the way has really improved his game since the start of the comp) 3-1, Jason Harris def. Kristie Jones 3-0 and Sam Pearce def. Darcy Clayton 3-0. This made the team win 18-1.

Other results were: Hillross 15 def. Cooma Crane Hire 5; Mark Kenmir & Co. 12 def. Kleven Spain 9 and Cooma Trophy and Gifts 12 def. Paul Dyball Builders 8. This means that in the semi-finals on Tuesday the following teams (showing the total points they finished with) will play:

Monaro Discount Tyres 151

Cooma Trophy and Gifts 126

Hillross 124

Kleven Spain.  1 v 4, 2 v 3

Good luck to all players.  The grand finals will be played on Thursday night.

B grade squash Report 25.3.13

B grade squash report:

Another good round was held last Thursday.  There were a number of 5-setters which shows that many of the gradings are spot-on. For Hillross their no. 1 Peter Luk had to pull out all stops when playing Larry Maat (Monaro Discount Tyres). They kept swapping the lead right to the end – the last game going to Peter 10-9 in a thriller.  Peter looked as if he had just stepped out of the shower when he came off the court! Only 3 points separated them at the end.

Kailey Tonini again played David Hogan (who was a sub.) Instead of a 3-0 victory last week David made her work for her points and was defeated in 5 by 3 games to 2.  Kim Kleven (Kleven Spain) had a long match against Sarah Hamilton (Cooma Trophies and Gifts) and although winning more points(35-32) she lost by 3 games to 2.  Again the last game was a thriller with Sarah coming up trumps 10-9!

Tony Potter (Kleven Spain) who has been undefeated this comp. had to use all his skill against Jacqui Schofield (Cooma Trophy and Gifts).  She took out the first game 9-4, lost the next two 9-2,9-2 and rallied to take the next 9-5.  But the ever cagey Tony – the second most senior player in the comp – took the final game 9-5 and thus the match.

Some other successful winners on the night were Steve Johnson def. Mathew Nader 3-0, Alex Walters def. Jed Mackay 3-1, Sam Pearce def. Bryn Jones 3-1 and Matt Shirvington def.Lyn Elton 3-1. The B1 players had better watch their backs with Steve Johnson charging through the ranks!

There were some fairly low team scores on the night because of absences.  It also should be noted that if you are unable to play for your team and a sub is used with the present method of scoring the sub gets no points for the team whether he or she wins or not and the opponent gets the full 4 points. The result does show up on individual scorings however.

Team results on the night were: Hydraulinks Cooma 11 def. Cooma Crane Hire 4; Cooma Trophy and Gifts 14 def. Kleven Spain 10;Mark Kenmir & Co. 11 def. Paul Dyball Builders 4 and Monaro Discoun Tyres 13 def. Hillross 9

Squash Finals and Awards 2012

Cooma Monaro Express - 18/12/12
The Cooma Squash Club held the finals at the courts on Thursday night. In "A" grade Hydraulinks Cooma came out the winners defeating Paul Dyball Builders. Corey Bedingfield set the tone by def. Phil Ingram. Phil was playing his last game for the club for 12 months as he is doing an exchange program overseas.

Luke Abraham had a good match against Peter Mould before defeating him in three games. Andrew Freeburn thought he was going to have an easy match against Mark Kenmir, winning the first two games 9-0,9-3. However Mark does not go down easily and took the next two, but succumbed in the fifth. The Tonini family rounded up the match with Jared beating his sister Kailey 3-1 Even though Kailey has been playing B grade she made him work for the result.

In "B" grade Monaro Discount Tyres defeating Cooma Crane Hire with the final result not decided till the last match. Corey Stockton - a newcomer to the comp. def. Lyn Elton in four. Then Peter Luk, who has not had a good run during the comp. took on the ever cagey Susan Walters. They went to five games - with Susan coming out the eventual winner after some very good squash. Matt Shirvington then played another newcomer to the comp. Ned McDonnell and had a good win - Matt has been playing very well through the whole comp. This left the final match between Sarah Hamilton and Darrell Gaukroger. This was won by Sarah in 4 - although the 70+ year old put up a fight and took one game off her.

The comp average winners were presented with their trophies on the night. Results were:

"A" Grade - A1 Corey Bedingfield, A2 Luke McDonald, A3 Andrew Freeburn and A4 Jan Wassink.

"B" Grade - B1 Susan Walters, B2 Alex Walters, B3 Tony Potter, B4 Matt Shirvington

During November the Club Championships were played and trophies were presented to the following players:

Womens:

A grade champion - Tara Pateman

B grade champion - Kailey Tonini, r/up Kim Kleven

B grade Plate - Irene Tozer

Mens:

A Grade champion - Corey Bedingfield, r/up Phil Ingram

A grade Plate - Luke McDonald

B grade champion - Hayden Smith, r/up Stuart Wood

B grade Plate - Matthew Kent

The final award of the night was the presentation of the Rorey Kennedy Award - voted by club members. It was won (for the second time) by Corey Bedingfield - and rightly so. Corey has once again done a sterling job organising the comps. through the year and it has been obviously appreciated by all members. The Summer comp will begin during January - there will be some chook runs in the meantime.
